White Elephant Serengeti Grey 11

Why does a German company name their brand after white elephants? Maybe there were a few mammoth roaming around our parts during the last ice age.. but elephants? The story is as follows: Robert Maderholz established a pipe manufactory shortly after World War II in Ettenstatt, Frankonia. Soon he produced pipes with Meerschaum inlays. A well known owner of a pipe shop in Munich, that also was a big fan of Meerschaum, had the idea to fill Meerschaum into filters, instead of the widely used active charcoal. So instead of pulverising the Meerschaum and form pipes with the addition of a binding agent, the material was grinded to small grains and filled into filter husks by hand. The only thing missing was a name… At this time the Meerschaum came from Tansania, and now the white elephants totally make sense. The Serengeti is a large savanna, stretching through Tansania and Kenia. At sunrise and sundown the land shimmers in a beautiful red, just like the briar applications we used in the series with the same name. We were able to find a new supplier, and we are very pleased with the high quality of the craftsmanship. A small briar sphere is inserted into the mouthpiece. Our symbol for ‘One World’.
